Summer Teaching & Learning Resources

Jun 11, 2020

The OTL has prepared a suite of offerings to support you as you prepare for summer or fall. Here are some highlights but be sure to see our calendar for more information! DU Teaching Toolkit: For anyone who is ready to go, we are excited to announce our DU Teaching Toolkit! This asynchronous guide provides practical steps for readying your courses, no matter the modality. From Canvas basics to hyflex considerations, and complete with worksheets to guide you, this toolkit is a great starting point for summer or fall planning. “Small Teaching Online” book group: In June, join Jared Del Rosso and Karen Weller Swanson for a 3-session book conversation of Flower Darby and James Lang’s Small Teaching Online.  This book outlines practical and feasible applications of theoretical principles to help your online students learn. It includes current best practices around educational technologies, strategies to build community and collaboration, and minor changes you can make in your online teaching practice, small but impactful adjustments that result in significant learning gains. Teaching Online Short Course (two sessions, starting July 1 and August 1): The Teaching Online Short Course will take place throughout the month of July and August and contains readings, assignments, and multimedia to help participants learn how to design and facilitate online courses effectively. The course takes place on Canvas, DU’s primary learning management system (LMS), so that participants can experience the structure of an online course as a student.  Hyflex Course Design Institute (July and August):  The Hyflex Course Design Institute is a two-week, online experience focused on designing hyflex courses that result in significant learning, and will be offered twice this summer (July 20-31 and August 10-21). While the primary focus of this institute will be on designing hyflex courses (that is, courses in which student can choose between face-to-face and online modes of participation), this institute will also be supportive to faculty members who are designed hybrid courses, as well as those who are designing “pivot ready” face-to-face courses in the coming academic year. This institute will consist of both synchronous and asynchronous activities, with ample opportunity for participants to learn from and with each other. Participants should plan to send an average of 3 hours per day on this work, Monday through Friday, for the two weeks of this course. Inclusive Teaching Practices: We invite faculty to utilize this asynchronous option as you consider ways to create more inclusive classrooms and dismantle systemic barriers to learning. Check out the new web site. Assessment Series (July and August):  The OTL is hosting a series of professional development workshops for anyone who would like to learn more about assessment alongside our Assessment Fellows. Each session aligns with a portion of the assessment process so departments can start the 2020-21 academic year feeling fresh and fancy-free about assessment. Each session begins with a mini-lecture (10-12 minutes), followed by Q&A, and then parallel play dates where people can work on their assessment initiative with virtual support from facilitators. The session will be recorded.
