Summer With the OTL

Jun 11, 2024

By: Leslie Cramblet AlvarezAssistant Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and the Director of the Office of Teaching and Learning

As the academic year wraps up, we want to thank you for all the ways you supported our students. If your summer plans include taking advantage of opportunities for advancing professional growth or teaching practice, the Office of Teaching and Learning is offering several short courses and institutes—many of which carry a stipend to honor the additional work.

Needs Assessment Survey

Help the OTL understand your needs and wants for programming in the coming year. Please take a moment to complete our brief needs assessment survey.

Course Design Institute

Will you be designing a new course or making major changes to an existing course? The summer Course Design Institute, offered July 29th – August 2nd, supports faculty in designing learning experiences that result in significant learning.

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Institute

DU’s Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Institute is a one-day faculty development event. COIL is a type of virtual exchange, where students from DU and a partner institution engage in purposeful interaction for global and intercultural learning through the discipline(s) in a jointly taught module through infusing content into existing courses or creating a new course. This institute is a collaboration between the Offices of Internationalization and Teaching and Learning.
COIL Institute Registration: August 6th
Please reach out to Casey.Dinger@du.edu with any questions about identifying a COIL partner or course.

Neurodiversity Institute (NDI)
The NDI, scheduled for August 13th – 14th, offers insights into the challenges encountered by neurodiverse learners. Through this training, faculty members gain the tools to foster inclusive learning environments for all students by incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and educational technology into their teaching practices. Apply here by June 21st. Please reach out to jasmine.yap@du.edu with any questions.

Teaching to Support Well-Being
Research shows that academic achievement and student well-being go hand in hand. In recent years, students have faced increasing challenges with mental health, and have high expectations of support from faculty. DU’s 4D experience highlights well-being as one aspect of holistic student education, but faculty often feel under-prepared to support student well-being.
We invite you to join us on August 22 from 8:30-12:30 for a half-day workshop on “Teaching to Support Well-Being” led by Dr. Kateri McRae, Professor of Psychology and 4D Faculty Fellow of Well-Being. This workshop will focus on actionable teaching practices which are likely to support student learning via student well-being. The session will include a brief review of the empirical literature on what contributes to student well-being, resilience, and thriving; an introduction to best practices for supporting aspects of student well-being in the classroom; and time to brainstorm and workshop ideas about how to apply this knowledge to an upcoming class. We will also acknowledge the boundaries of the instructor’s role in supporting student well-being, and provide resources for how instructors can support student well-being without sacrificing their own.

Register for the Teaching to Support Well-Being workshop.
