Heart of Higher Education 2021: Rooted and Rising Discussion

May 4, 2021

The Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs invites you to attend a three-day (June 16-18, 2021) virtual conference/retreat co-hosted by DU faculty and staff. Participants will explore personal and professional commitments and challenges to sustaining the heart of higher education. The poet Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer writes, “Sometimes I want to be anywhere but here, / but today, I let myself feel it all.” To feel it all in higher education is to know that we live in a changed landscape. In this virtual gathering of educators, we will lean into the challenges of creating effective learning opportunities in the midst of pandemics—climate, social, economic, health, and heart—while remaining faithful to the deep roots of human learning and flourishing.

The event is designed for all who work in higher education (staff, students, faculty, and administrators). Conference/retreat goals include: naming core personal and professional callings with integrity; nurturing and caring for the hearts of others with fidelity; and faithfully acting to transform education. Conversation partners during the gathering include: Parker J. Palmer, author of Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher’s Life; Laura Rendón, author of Sentispensanste Pedagogy: Sensing/Thinking, and Colorado poet, Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer, the conference’s poet in residence.
